My Podcasts
In Keeping Up with Current Events, I talked about the websites I turn to each morning to stay informed; in My Evening Reads, I shared the many others I follow on niche subjects. Podcasts, however, are another important part of how I learn and grow. Some offer regular updates on current events, while others dive deep into niche topics. As a complement to Keeping Up with Current Events and My Evening Reads, I wanted to start a list of the podcasts I follow here.
The list below is generally ordered by the amount of time I spent listening to each show throughout 2024. It is not all-inclusive: I listen to episodes of other podcasts here and there, and it does not include discontinued shows I still subscribe to in case they return, but these are the shows I regularly listen to. I listen in Overcast.
- Roderick on the Line. I have listened to Roderick on the Line for over ten years, since episode one. John Roderick co-hosts a similar podcast with Dan Bengamin, Road Work, that I also enjoy.
- The Jocko Podcast. Although the show has unfortunately shifted to more interviews than the hard-hitting reviews of its early years, I still listen to many of these episodes. Also check out Jocko Unravelling, which focuses on current events.
- Back to Work. I have also listened to Back to Work for over ten years, since episode one.
- The Lawfare Podcast. I pick and choose individual episodes from this informative podcast.
- The Phoenix Cast. The hosts tackle cybersecurity, technology, and innovation issues in the military.
- Hardcore History. Dan Carlin continues to produce one of the best podcasts on the internet. He also posts extra material from the show in Hardcore History: Addendum. Also check out Common Sense.
- Modern War Institute. The Modern War Institute at West Point produces a great show on military topics. Also check out Ctrl Alt Army, another Modern War Institute show that focuses specifically on military cyber.
- War on the Rocks Podcast. Ryan Evans, founder of War on the Rocks, hosts an interesting interview show that focuses on military topics.
Even just this short list gives me more to listen to than I have time, but I keep up as much as I can, and I’m always on the lookout for great new shows.
